25 seats available for November workshop

*** UPDATED INFORMATION IN RED ***

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is now taking applications for its Citizens’ Academy, a free workshop that brings officers and citizens together to discuss the department’s law enforcement practices.

There are 25 seats available for the three-day academy, which provides an inside look at the job of a police officer. Participants should be prepared to attend class at the following times:

  • Wednesday, November 6, 6–9 p.m.,
  • Thursday, November 7, 6–9 p.m.,
  • Friday, November 8, 5–10 p.m.

Instructors will cover the structure of the department and unit responsibilities, as well as run attendees through the same PRISM scenarios and use-of-force options used to train new recruits. Hands-on opportunities will include a K9 apprehension demonstration, speed enforcement with the Motors Unit, and firearms shooting with SWAT.

The Police Department’s Training Unit will fill available seats in the order they are received as long as applicants are:

  • at least 18 years of age,
  • live or work in Salt Lake City proper,
  • and pass a basic background check.
