Officers responded to a shoplifter at the Home Depot. Details of the call indicated that the suspect James Powell, 20, was loading items into a shopping cart. The complainant stated that James had done this the other day but was able to get away. An officer arrived just as the Powell was making his way out of the parking lot. The officer told the Powell to stop, which he ignored and then took off running east across 300 W. Powell tried retrieving the large hatchet/knife that was on his hip as he was running away. The officer caught up with him and challenged him at gunpoint until backing officers arrived and took him into custody. Powell was taken to jail for fleeing and retail theft.
