2010 Justice Assistance Grant Program

The 2010 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Application Process has been announced. As a requirement of the grant, we must make our application intent available to our residents. This information packet will serve to inform SLC residents of the Police Department’s intent to apply for this grant, and how the Police Department intends to spend these funds.

Salt Lake City qualifies to apply for $549,726 in the 2010 JAG program. Of that total, SLC will receive $370,482 and Salt Lake County will receive $159,244. SLC’s breakdown of proposed expenditures is as follows:
               
Salt Lake City

  $150,000 purchase a driving simulator to reduce officer involved accidents, and injuries to officers and the public by providing more effective and frequent training
  $20,000 for coordination, training, scheduling, for a trainer for the simulator
  $20,000 for a media contract extension for videographer services
  $20,000 Contracted Crime Analysis Interns
  $25,482 for replacement of outdated, deteriorating, broken fitness equipment
  $10,000 for computer software for crime analysis
  $10,000 to purchase SWAT rifles
  $20,000 to purchase patrol rifles
  $15,000 contract with the Salt Lake City Peer Court program to enhance efforts in preventing and deterring juvenile crime
  $40,000 to provide training for both sworn and civilian personnel in their areas of expertise to maintain an optimal level of training
  $30,000 for Directed Community Policing Overtime to focus on problem areas as they arise
  $10,000 to purchase uniforms and supplies for the Police Department’s Youth Explorer program
TOTAL $370,482

The grant has seven purpose areas under which all expenses must fall. Ours fall within Law Enforcement Programs, Prevention and Education, and Technology Improvement. There are also several priorities within the program, of which we are addressing “Smart Policing – Evidence-based and Data-driven Law Enforcement.” This grant application will be submitted on June 30th, and the funding is scheduled to be awarded with a start date of October 1, 2010.
