Robbery and Assault Squad
At the beginning of 2008, the Robbery/Assault Squad was handling robberies, simple and aggravated assaults, kidnappings, obstruction of justice cases, assault on police officers, false information to police officers, and threats cases. Statistics for these crimes were all compiled in one statistical database, resulting in confusing and misleading statistics on the activities of the squad in relation to felonies and Part One Crimes.
In 2008, the Robbery Squad expanded the use of the weekly Valley-Wide Robbery Investigator's Meeting. The larger agencies in the Salt Lake Valley had attended this meeting in the past, but in 2008 the invitation was re-extended to all agencies and frequent calls were made requesting other agencies to attend. As a result, more agencies attended and on four separate occasions during 2008 valley-wide cooperative efforts targeting specific serial robbery suspects were organized through this partnership.
The robbery squad also formed a closer working relationship with the Salt Lake City Gang Unit. Robbery squad detectives utilized the knowledge of these gang detectives to track down known gang members and solve many crimes throughout 2008.
