Testing and Selection Process:

The testing and selection process for this position consists of the following phases:

  1. UTAH N.P.O.S.T. SCORES (pass/fail)
All candidates must turn in a copy of their Utah N.P.O.S.T. scores prior to the application deadline.  If the candidate pool is large a cutoff or “pass rate” is determined by the Utah N.P.O.S.T. scores, and will consider the natural break, adverse impacts and departmental need.  Those candidates successfully achieving the “pass rate” will be invited to proceed to the next phase of the testing and selection process.  The scores of those individuals who will proceed to the next phase of the testing and selection process will be based solely on their Utah N.P.O.S.T. score.
  2. PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST (pass/fail)
On the day of the physical agility test, candidates MUST bring picture identification (i.e. driver license, passport, or military I.D. card) in which we will verify each candidates birth date (must be 21 years of age on/by the date of the physical agility test).  Candidates reaching this phase will be notified of the event date, time, and place of the physical agility test.  The physical agility test consists of the following four exercises: push-ups, sit-ups, vertical jump, and a mile and a half (1.5) run.  Candidates are required to pass the physical agility test at 50% in each area to continue with the selection process.
  3. LESI ONLINE PERSONAL HISTORY QUESTIONNAIRE (PHQ) (hurdle exam)
All candidates who pass the physical agility test will be required to complete an online personal history questionnaire.  Each candidate will receive a score.  Candidates who receive a smaller score will be more likely to move forward in the testing process.
  4. LESI WRITTEN EXAMINATION (Suitability Test) (pass/fail)
Applicants who are asked to move forward after completion of the personal history questionnaire will be invited to participate in the LESI written exam.  This exam will consist of a 12 minute timed Wonderlic exam followed by a personality test that will not have a maximum time limit.  Remaining applicants will be notified of the event date, time and place of the LESI written examination.
  5. PRESENT POLICE OFFICER ELIGIBILITY REGISTER TO THE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION
  6. COMPUTER VOICE STRESS ANALYSIS (CVSA) (pass/fail)
The top candidates from the eligibility register will be required to complete a Computer Voice Stress Analysis evaluation.  This instrument is used for truth verification which measures “microtremors” in the voice, then provides the examiner a visual chart which is interpreted as deceptive or non-deceptive.  The examination uses only a microphone and no wires are attached to the subject.
  7. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION (pass/fail)
The top candidates from the eligibility register will be required to undergo a background investigation.  The investigation may explore such areas as employment history, driving record, arrest and conviction record, personal references, and drug use history.
  8. PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION (pass/fail)
The top candidates from the eligibility register will be required to complete and pass a thorough psychological evaluation.  It is important to note that the examination is not designated to measure mental health.  Rather, the examination compares your profile to that of a successful police officer in the Salt Lake City Police Department.  The Department has carefully reviewed the psychological examination and we believe this examination is a good predictor of success as a Police Officer.
  9. INTERVIEW
The top candidates from the eligibility register who have successfully completed a computer voice stress analysis, background investigation, and psychological evaluation and will be contacted by phone and invited in for an interview with the Police Chief.
  10. MEDICAL EXAMINATION AND DRUG SCREEN (pass/fail)
After receiving a conditional offer of employment candidates must successfully complete and pass a thorough medical examination, including a drug screen.  Physicians who perform the medical examination consider the severity of any problem in making the pass/fail decision.
