Ecstacy
Most commonly known as ecstasy but also known as Adam, X, XTC, Stacy, and love drug. MDMA is typically in a tablet or capsule form (in many shapes and colors) or in a powder. It can be snorted, smoked, or injected but is usually taken orally. It is a synthetic, hallucinogenic drug that gives the user a sense of euphoria, greater self esteem, and a change in visual perception among many other things. Some physical effects that usually subside rather quickly include blurred vision, increased heart rate, nausea, teeth grinding, and increased body temperature. It is popular among the rave scene because it causes the release of large quantities of serotonin in the brain and also blocks its reuptake which creates an amphetamine-like stimulation that enables ravers to dance for long periods of time without tiring. MDMA abuse can cause confusion, depression, severe anxiety, sleep problems, and can possibly permanently damage serotonin nerve terminals in the brain.
Numerous deaths have been attributed to MDMA caused by serotonin syndrome. The symptoms of serotonin syndrome include: increased body temperature, excessive sweating, muscle spasms, coma, cardiovascular collapse, and death. Another cause of death from MDMA use comes from heat stroke or abnormal fluid and/ or electrolyte balance.
