Inhalants

Inhalants are chemical vapors that are "huffed" to cause mind-altering affects. Often times these are common household chemicals found under the kitchen sink and in the garage such as aerosols, nail polish remover, spray paints, gasoline, glue, marking pens, whipped cream canisters, lighter fluid, cleaning fluid, and other volatile substances. The effects are similar to alcohol inebriation which is loss of inhibition, intoxication, nausea, slurred speech, loss of coordination, and distorted perceptions. Inhalants are often abused because they are much easier to conceal than other illicit drugs with intoxication occurring quickly and lasting only a few minutes. Inhalants are extremely dangerous and continual abuse or even just one session can cause permanent organ damage, coma, convulsions or seizures, and death. Some abusers experience nausea, sweating, restlessness, anxiety, and other withdrawal symptoms when they stop huffing. Possible identifiers of a "huffer" include: chemical odors on clothing and breath, paint or other stains on body, mouth, or clothing, hidden chemical containers or chemical soaked rags, and other symptoms listed above.
