SALT LAKE CITY — Drivers who leave a vehicle idling but unattended this winter may wind up with a friendly reminder from police – if they’re lucky. This was the message Salt Lake City Police sent out in October. Today, auto theft detectives conducted an operation in our city and found 47 vehicles idling and unattended. The operation was conducted between the hours of 7:00-10:00 a.m. Theft Awareness Cards were left on the vehicles found to be unattended as a reminder of what could have happened today.

Note: A city ordinance enacted in 2011 also prohibits the idling of vehicles within city limits for more than two minutes, although there is an exemption when temperatures drop below 32-degrees Fahrenheit. Parking Enforcement, part of Salt Lake City Public Services Compliance Division, enforces this ordinance.
