SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department receives hundreds of calls for service each day. Not all calls result in a report or arrest. Compiled by Watch Commanders in the field, the Watch Log is a summary of events that stand out to them in a given 24-hour period. Call times listed are approximate and typically reflect the first call received by SLC911 (Dispatch) for a given case. Items contained herein are based on information available at the time of its release and should not be interpreted as an admission or finding of guilt. Arrest information may differ from formal charges filed by the prosecuting agency. To see a list of completed calls for service in the last 48 hours, visit

While handling a shoplifting call at the Walmart officers were notified that a male suspect was outside vandalizing a police car. They found the suspect banging on the police car with a snow shovel.  When officers approached, the suspect raised the shovel over his head and yelled at the officers. One of the officers attempted to deploy his Tazer on the suspect, but it did not make full contact.  After a brief standoff the suspect eventually put the shovel down and officers were able to take him into custody.  Officers booked Robert Martinez (59) into jail for criminal mischief, aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and several warrants.
