SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department receives hundreds of calls for service each day. Not all calls result in a report or arrest. Compiled by Watch Commanders in the field, the Watch Log is a summary of events that stand out to them in a given 24-hour period. Call times listed are approximate and typically reflect the first call received by SLC911 (Dispatch) for a given case. Items contained herein are based on information available at the time of its release and should not be interpreted as an admission or finding of guilt. Arrest information may differ from formal charges filed by the prosecuting agency. An officer observed the two suspects walking west on 3300 South and attempted to detain them. As the officer made contact, the female was compliant, but the male would not follow directions and began to run away. An assisting officer apprehended Jeffrey Boynton (44) a block away. Boynton was booked into jail for retail theft, fleeing and possession of a controlled substance. The female was released on a citation. 6:21 p.m. Victim Joseph Burford (73) was turning a dog over to its owner when it got loose and ran out onto the roadway on Beck St. Burford chased after the dog and was hit by a southbound truck. The truck pulled over initially and a male white got out to check on him. Burford was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. After Burford was transported to the hospital and prior to police arriving at the scene of the accident, the driver left. After media reports, on 12/23/2018, the driver contacted police and is cooperating with the investigation. The dog in this incident suffered minor injuries but is expected to recover. This case will be screened with the Salt Lake County DA’s office for possible charges.
