SLCPD Investigating Shooting, 1 Person Dead

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a shooting that killed one person outside the Salt Palace Convention Center.

“My deepest condolences go out to the family of the man killed,” said SLCPD Chief Mike Brown. “We have devoted many resources to this investigation. What happened today does not represent downtown or our great city. Our police officers did a remarkable job during a chaotic and quickly unfolding event. They showed compassion and helped people who found themselves in a very stressful situation. I’m proud of our officers.”

This investigation started at 3:19 p.m. on Saturday September 3, 2022, when SLC911 received multiple 9-1-1 calls about a shooting at 100 South State Street.

Officers from across the city immediately responded.

Additional 9-1-1 calls came in suggesting the shooting happened two blocks to the west, near 150 South West Temple.

Officers conducted an extensive search in the area and located a man on the ground with a gunshot injury.

Officers provided emergency medical aid. Gold Cross took the victim to the hospital where he later died.

This does not appear to be a random shooting. Based on the preliminary investigation, there was a fight between the victim and several people before the shooting as they left the convention center.

The shooting happened on West Temple.

Witnesses told officers the shooter and at least one other person associated with him ran into a nearby parking garage and left in a car.

Officers checked nearby businesses and parking garages looking for any potential threats or additional victims.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is in the process of collecting witness statements and reviewing photos and videos from the shooting.

At this point, the SLCPD believes there are people who witnessed the shooting, or who may have recorded the shooting, and left before speaking with officers.

Currently, there is no suspect information available for release. No arrests have been made.

Anyone who has information on this shooting, including photos and video, and who has not already talked to SLCPD about this incident, is asked to call 801-799-3000.

The SLCPD Homicide Squad will work with the medical examiner’s office to confirm the man’s name, age, cause of death and to notify next-of-kin.

As part of this investigation, SLCPD victim advocates and social workers responded to provide support, resources and advocacy to the victim’s family and witnesses.

A SLCPD PIO responded to the scene to provide community members and media updates.

This is the eighth homicide in Salt Lake City for 2022.

No further information on this case is being released. Neither the PIO nor the On-Duty Watch Commander are available for additional interviews.

Several photos from the scene are being released.
