SLCPD Homicide Squad, Bike Officers & Patrol Officers Arrest Attempted Murder Suspect

SALT LAKE CITY — Tonight, members of the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad, Liberty Bike Squad and patrol officers, quickly and effectively coordinated the safe arrest of 60-year-old Joseph Marquez.

“An extraordinary amount of work goes into keeping our city safe,” said Chief Mike Brown. “Much of that work is out of public view. It includes our crime analysts, our victim advocates, our social workers and our detectives. I cannot stress enough – our patrol officers and specialty units – like our bike squads, are in our community every day working to proactively reduce crime. I am proud of their work and commitment to public safety. We would not be at this point in this investigation had it not been for the unrelenting work of our police officers and detectives who dropped everything to chase down the suspect in this case. They have my deep gratitude and I hope the community – especially those in the Ballpark neighborhood – recognize the sacrifices and hard work of our officers.”

Marquez is accused of shooting and attempting to kill a 38-year-old man during an argument over a cigarette. He will be booked into jail on charges of Attempted Murder, Obstruction of Justice and Unlawful Transaction of a Firearm by a Restricted Person.

The victim’s name is not being released pending next-of-kin-notification.

This investigation started at 10:05 a.m. on Tuesday October 10, 2022, when SLC911 received a 9-1-1 call about a shooting at the Wasatch Inn, located at 1416 South State Street.

SLCPD patrol officers and members of the SLCPD Liberty Bike Squad quickly responded and found the victim in the motel’s parking lot with a gunshot wound. SLCPD officers immediately started life-saving efforts.

Gold Cross Ambulance and the Salt Lake City Fire Department helped SLCPD officers with life-saving efforts.

Gold Cross Ambulance took the victim to the hospital in critical condition, where he remains.

On Tuesday October 10, 2022, the SLCPD Homicide Squad safely found and arrested 71-year-old Thomas Leroy Glasker for Attempted Murder and Obstruction of Justice.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the victim and Marquez got into a fight.

Witnesses told detectives they saw Glasker give Marquez the gun.

After shooting the victim, Marquez allegedly left the motel with the assistance of Glasker.

Due to the extent of the victim’s injuries, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad is leading this investigation.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call 801-799-3000 and reference case number 22-201391.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.
