SLCPD Activates OICI Protocol, 1 Person in Critical but Stable Condition

SALT LAKE CITY — Today, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) activated the Officer-Involved-Critical-Incident (OICI) protocol following a shooting involving a 37-year-old man.

Statements in this release are based on a preliminary review of limited information available at the time of writing. A thorough investigation is being conducted by an outside agency, pursuant to the OICI protocol. Additionally, the SLCPD Internal Affairs Unit will conduct a separate investigation.

“Today, our officers took action to protect two social workers and a family member during an incident that unfolded in a split second,” said Chief Mike Brown. “Our officers were asked by social workers to respond to this call for their protection and assistance. These are situations that are never predictable, but our two involved officers relied on their training and experience to protect others and themselves.”

This investigation started at 11:32 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, when officers responded to a home near 1700 South 900 East at the request of the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI)’s Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT).

MCOT requested the assistance of the SLCPD while social workers and a family member contacted the 37-year-old man inside a detached garage.

Upon their arrival, officers met with the MCOT social workers and the family member and were escorted to the garage.

While inside the garage, the officers waited while the social workers and the family member spoke with the man.

During the incident, the suspect reached for a weapon. Both officers fired shots.

Officers took the man into custody and started providing medical aid.

The Salt Lake City Fire Department later assisted with medical aid.

Gold Cross Ambulance transported the man to the hospital in critical condition. The man is currently listed in critical but stable condition.

Aside from the man shot, there were no other injuries.

The man’s identity is not being released at this time.

The two officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave, which is a standard procedure.

OICI Protocol Team Four is leading this investigation.

The SLCPD Public Relations Unit responded to the scene and provided the community with regular updates.

Three photos from the scene are being released.

There is no other information available for release at this time.
