Salt Lake City Police Department Gun Turn In - June 11, 2022

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, the Salt Lake City Police Department and the Salt Lake City Police Foundation will host a gun turn-in event on Saturday June 11, 2022.

The Salt Lake City Police Foundation generously sponsored this event and will be providing gift cards to community members who are willing to turn-in their firearms.

See below for frequently asked questions:

1Where is the event taking place?
This event will be taking place on Saturday June 11, 2022 from 11 AM until 3 PM at the Public Safety Building, located at 475 South 300 East in Salt Lake City.
2How much money will I get for turning in a firearm?
Each person who turns in a firearm will get a $50 gift card. People with assault rifles will receive a $100 gift card.
3How many gift cards am I eligible for?
Only one gift card will be given per person. If you have more than one firearm, those additional firearms will still be accepted but you will only receive one gift card. This allows us to provide services to as many people as possible.
4Will I have to give my name or any information about how I got access to the gun?
No. This will be a no questions-asked event. An ID will not be required in order to turn in a firearm or to receive a gift card.
5Do I have to live in Salt Lake City to participate?
No. This event is open to anyone. First come, first serve.
6What happens if you run out of gift cards?
We likely will, and that’s a good thing because it means we’ve gotten about 100 guns no longer wanted off our streets. If we run out and you’re still in line or come after the fact, the event will run until 3 p.m. We will gladly take your firearm from you, but unfortunately, once we’re out of gift cards, we’ll be out.
7How should I bring my firearm?
It’s imperative you transport your firearm safely. Make sure it is unloaded and made secure. If you have a gun lock or a case, please put that firearm in the case or use the gun lock. When you approach the event greeters, they will ask you if the gun is secured, unloaded and where it is located.
8What about ammo?
Although ammo is not eligible for a gift card, we will accept ammo being turned in.
9What is going to happen with the gun once I turn it in?
The guns will be safely stored with SLCPD and eventually destroyed or turned into our police museum or police crime lab.
10What if I want my gun back?
After a gun is turned in, it will not be eligible for release.
11Where is the event located, again?
The Public Safety Building, located at 475 South 300 East in Salt Lake City. Be sure to look for the event ambassadors to help guide you into place. The best point of access will be from 300 East.
